What IS an Altered Book?

An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and/or meaning. This art form is becoming increasingly popular in the contemporary art scene. It is a FUN process that provides an opportunity for personal exploration and experimentation. A few examples can be found here and here.
Creating altered imagery is a process that can be explored by using mixed-media collage techniques, painting, printmaking methods, photography and more. Working with altered imagery allows us to examine our environment, our surroundings and how we relate to them. This is a process of creative play which will increase confidence, build creative strength and bring you to more creative adventures.

In this class
We will use collage, paint and altered imagery to explore the creative process. Using an old book as a starting point, we will explore a medley of techniques in a fun, expressive way. The book will be used as a catalyst to a poignant, meaningful work of art. For the beginner as well as the experienced artist.
