Weekly inspiration & Joy: Georgia O’Keeffe, pansies, paint & paintings

I LOVE sharing  weekly inspiration over on over on Instagram – next to my website it’s my favorite online home! You will find lots of upliftment: color, quotes, positive affirmations and behind the scenes peeks into my creative process.

Here’s a recap from the week.

For those of you who aren’t on Instagram I invite you to  come over and join me! 🙂

MINDFUL MONDAY : April 8, 2019

“April in Paris, chestnuts in blossom, holiday tables under the trees” ~E.Y. Harburg⁣ 🌺⁣

I couldn’t help but “hear” Billie Holiday belting out this song in my head on this dreary New England day. Perfect music for doing a little painting and some reflection…⁣ 🌺⁣

I spent part of the weekend soaking up the sunshine in my garden. I’m SO itching to be outside! Even though it’s a little early I couldn’t resist potting some sweet pansies. They are so bright and cheery outside my studio and on my back deck. They make me SMILE SO BIG! Any flowers coming up in your garden or that you’ve planted? ⁣

TERRIFIC TUESDAY : April 9, 2019

I had an opportunity to see Georgia O’Keeffe’s beautiful paintings at the New Britain Museum of American Art last week when I went to drop off the paintings for my show at the Hospital for Special Care.

Although most of the works on view were her oil paintings I was excited to see two of her watercolors that I had never seen in person before. I was struck by the rich saturation of color and the boldness of her big brushstrokes. (*take a peek in my stories if you want to see the paintings I’m referring to). My little seascapes are so delicate in comparison.⁣

Although I’m having so much fun capturing the soft, sweet essence of the sea with these airy washes I always learn new things looking at the work of the masters who came before me and Georgia was such a gift to us all. ⁣

WISDOM WEDNESDAY : April 10, 2019

Since I’ve been painting more with watercolor lately I spent some time going through all my paints. I sorted them, noted what colors I loved the most and got rid of all the hard, crusty ones (some of which I had since I was an undergraduate in college!). These are some of the new dreamy colors I invested in. 💕⁣
I’ve always had a love for @DanielleSmith & @WindsorNewtonpaints and will pay more for their beautiful pigments. They can be a bit more of an investment, but I have to say some of those paints that I never used up (why didn’t I use them?!?!?) lasted for over 20 years and were SO vibrant, something I always try to express in my paintings. ⁣
Back in art school I was shy about using my materials. Working 3 jobs at the time I truly valued where I spent my money and never wanted to “waste” anything. The trouble is when you don’t allow yourself the freedom to make mistakes and “use your stuff” you never grow. At some point you have to develop faith in yourself and allow time for “play,” not worrying about the outcome. I’ve grown so much since that time and now look forward to experimenting and using ALL the paint! 😉⁣
Have you ever had any art materials or something you felt was “too precious” to use? ⁣

“Simple Intention” 6″ x 6″ mixed media *available in SHOP

“The creative process is mysterious; a conversation, a ride in the car, or a melody can trigger something.” ~Alejandro Gonzalez⁣

⁣Although this painting has several flowers in it, I was inspired by the allium bulbs I have in my garden. They are such a beautiful bulb to watch open! (swipe to see). ⁣

⁣From what I have learned the allium flower means unity, humility and patience which I think a lot about every time I go into the studio to paint. ⁣

⁣I collaged some vintage text into the background and if you look closely you will see the words, “Simple Intention” woven into the painting. I set daily intentions for my art and my life each day and then stay open to whatever comes my way.⁣ It’s a beautiful way to focus your energy on what you are wanting in your life. ⁣

⁣Do you ever set intentions for yourself?⁣

⁣*You can find this painting in the shop.

FABULOSO FRIDAY: April 12, 2019

“We know only too well that what we are doing is nothing more than a drop in the ocean. But if the drop were not there, the ocean would be missing something.” ⁣ ― Mother Teresa⁣
Always remember how fabulous you are! To think that the “it” that made you also created the sun, the moon, the mountains, rivers, trees, bees, butterflies and each delicate flower also created YOU! Pretty miraculous if you ask me. 🙂 Take a moment to marvel at how special & unique you are. Know that you are appreciated loved for being you. ⁣
May you have the most delightful weekend! ⁣
