Happy Happy Spring!

Even though it still feels like winter here in Connecticut I am dreaming of milder temperatures and my garden coming to life. Winter offers its own rewards of warm fires, rich red wine, cozy sweaters and the indulgence of lazy movie days when you are forced indoors to escape the blustery snow. I try to embrace this time and use it to be reflective. It is a season of dreaming and planning.

I recently purchased Floret Farm's beautiful gardening book which I think you may enjoy. It's the perfect little pick me up from the gray days before spring arrives in full bloom. You will find joyful color and gorgeous flowers to awaken your soul. It offers a variety of tips for flower care, many of which I never knew.  Perfect for cultivating a little beauty in your life whether you have a green thumb or not.

I have been going outside to the garden every day to see what's peeking through the soil. So far I only see hints of my tulip and daffodil bulbs. They are quite resilient, despite the snow that continues to blanket them on and off. I adore bulbs and will continue adding more to my garden every year. They are the first flowers to blossom and never disappoint.

Although there are so many bulbs to admire, I have a soft spot for the orange tulips I planted a few years ago. Their vibrant color brings me so much joy and inspired the painting, "The Wave" you will see below. I love weaving in pops of orange in my paintings. It's such a bright, warm, cheerful color that gives off  all the "feels" I try to convey in my work. It often represents fire, sun, fun, warmth and tropical surroundings which could be another reason I love it so much.

Some other fun things you may not know about orange:

  • It adds spontaneity and a positive way of looking at life.

  • It's a color that embody's risk-taking, adventure, physical confidence and independence.

  • It promotes conversation (I always keep a little orange in my kitchen and dining room for this reason).

  • It offers new ideas.

  • It encourages self-respect and the respect for others.

  • It increases creativity.

  • It is the color of a youthful mentality.

  • It is considered an optimistic color, known to uplift our spirits.

Try weaving a little pop of orange into your home and see how it makes you feel when you are surrounded by such a bubbly color. Flowers, candles, a throw pillow or even a bowl of clementines are easy things to experiment with. I even painted the french door in my house a sunny orange and it makes me smile every time I look at it. I just don't see how you can go wrong  with a little orange in your life :) .
